From June 9-27, Classics Ph.D. student Kiran Mansukhani attended a summer seminar titled, “The People and Places of Ancient Philosophy.” Kiran is especially thankful to have received a grant from the Masciantonio Fund of the Classical Association of the Atlantic States.
The purpose of the Masciantonio Fund “is to provide funds to support the teaching of Latin, ancient Greek, and Classical Studies. Classical Studies is defined as the study of the languages, literatures, civilizations, cultures, histories, and heritages of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome.”
The seminar was hosted by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens and led by a Brown Classics alumnus, Professor Geoff Bakewell of Rhodes College. The class visited areas of Greece relevant to the study of ancient philosophy. These included sites such as Plato’s Academy, Aristotle’s Lyceum, the ancient Athenian Agora, the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki (home to the Derveni Papyrus), as well as the sites of ancient Olympia and Corinth. More information and photos of the seminar can be found on ASCSA social media.
